Will Meghan Markle’s Child Be a Prince or Princess?

Will Meghan Markle’s Child Be a Prince or Princess?

The Duchess's children, just like any other royal offspring, are royal by blood. Regardless of the opinions or accusations surrounding them, or even by law and ceremony, they are part of the royal lineage that extends back to centuries of kings and queens.

Recent Updates in Royal Titles

The latest announcement reveals that King Charles III has granted the titles of Prince and Princess to Archie and Lillibet,

However, this can change. King Charles III could issue a new letters patent and exclude Harry’s children from all royal titles. In fact, he could do the same to Harry himself. Fingers crossed and hopeful for a positive outcome.

Desire for Royal Titles

Much has been speculated about whether Meghan and her family want their children to have royal titles. After all, many believe they despise the monarchy and everything it stands for.

Please note that, while the law states yes, they have not yet been granted the titles of HRH, and based on their parents’ future actions, this may never happen. Additionally, there is a possibility that the law itself could be altered by King Charles III and his government to determine who can be called Prince or Princess.

Laws and Regulations Governing Royal Titles

According to the law as it stands, the answer is yes. Specifically, the Rules of Succession Act 2013 states:

The children of any Sovereign of these Realms and the children of the sons of any such Sovereign, and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, shall have and at all times hold and enjoy the style, title, or attribute of Royal Highness with their titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their respective Christian names or with their other titles of honour.

This law applies in a similar way to Princes and Princesses like Beatrice, Eugenie, and the grandkids of Charles and Diana. Their status as royal grandkids in the male line of the sovereign is clear.

In other cases, such as Edward's children, they could use the title HRH, but their parents decided not to use it, allowing them to choose as adults. For other royal members, like Louise, the decision has not been made yet. Meanwhile, George got the HRH Prince title from a 1917 letters patent, which was later extended to include Charlotte and Louise as HRH Princess and Prince.
