Why I Left the United Kingdom for the United States: My Journey and Insights
Introduction
When people ask me, 'Why did you move to England from America?', I have to pause in disbelief. Let me clarify, I have never lived in America, and I have no desire to do so. Over the years, the United Kingdom, particularly my home in London, has offered me a safer, more culturally rich, and better quality of life. However, in 2009, a pivotal decision led me to experience the United States from the perspective of an expatriate.
The Professional Decision That Led to My Move
In 2009, my wife, who is a managing director at a British multinational bank, was approached with an exciting opportunity. She was asked to lead a team in Henderson, Nevada. While my wife relished the opportunity, I was already a director at my family's securities business, and my co-director, my uncle, was looking to sell up. This meant I had the flexibility to accompany her.
The Challenges of Working in the United States
One of the significant challenges of relocating to the United States is the work culture. It is generally less favorable in terms of work-life balance compared to EU and Western European countries. Despite the popular complaint about long working hours, particularly for those at the top, this issue is less pronounced for those with high responsibilities. In London, my wife would wake up at 5 AM, leaving at 6 AM, arriving at 7 AM and never leaving earlier than 6 PM, sometimes staying as late as 8 PM. She would then spend an hour on her commute home.
Our Life in Henderson, Nevada: A Treasure Trove of Opportunities
In 2011, we made the move to Henderson, where we purchased a stunning 5000 sq ft home for approximately £550k at that time. The house featured a swimming pool, a whirlpool, a game room, an outdoor living space, and a barbecue area. It was the perfect sanctuary for us to enjoy our new life.
Retirement in the United Kingdom
Despite the allure of Henderson, my wife's commitment to herjob and desire to continue working eventually convinced her to stay. Since leaving the family business in 2012, I took an early retirement at the age of 35, having sold our company to a U.S. blue chip corporation. Now, I spend my days enjoying life at a more relaxed pace, cherishing the blessings that led us to this point.
Lessons Learned and Advice for Future Expats
Anyone moving to the United States from Europe should remember that the cost of living is nearly double what it is in the UK. Therefore, it is crucial to negotiate a salary that reflects this difference. In 2009, we accepted a job offer in the US, but only when the company agreed to pay my wife double her UK salary, which was in pounds at the time.
Looking back, we stayed in the United States for ten years (2009-2019) and found it invaluable for our financial goals. It became clear that, for Western Europeans, the primary reason to move to the United States is for financial reasons. Yet, living there requires a substantial financial cushion, as the costs associated with living in the US are astronomically higher.
Conclusion: A Love for Both Nations
Although we chose to return to the UK, we still treasure our time in the United States. We miss the convenience of Henderson, the camaraderie with our American friends, and the unique shopping experiences. I believe the United States offers some of the most stunning scenery and genuine people in the world, but it is not for everyone. My advice to those who wish to experience the American dream is to first explore the country beyond the big cities and immerse yourself in the real America. However, it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the financial commitment required to make it there.
Finally, I love America and the American people, despite the occasional idiocy that can be found in any nation. The majority of Americans are hardworking, friendly, and always willing to go the extra mile for you. Whether you are relocating to the United States or remaining in the UK, the choice should be made with an awareness of what each country offers uniquely.
