Understanding First-Class Stamps and Their Validity

When dealing with postage, one common question arises: will two first-class stamps cover a large letter? This article will provide clarity on the validity of stamps and the importance of QR codes for postage.

Validity of Stamps

Stamps marked as first or second class are always valid for that service, irrespective of their face value or the current price. What matters is the classed service they represent, not the monetary value.

For example, currently, a first-class stamp is 85p, and a large letter up to 100g is 1.29. Therefore, two first-class stamps (which cost 1.70) would indeed cover a large letter and even more, as they would also cover a standard international letter priced at 1.70.

Transition to Barcoded Stamps

It's important to note that in the near future, all stamps will require a QR code for proper tracking through the mail delivery system.

Each stamp, and each letter, will be fully traceable. While this may be seen as a convenient feature by some, others might view it as an invasion of privacy. Regardless, Royal Mail will exchange any unbarcoded stamps for equivalent barcoded ones as long as the stamp itself is still valid for first or second-class service.

Stamp Prices and Classes

The following are the current prices for different classes of mail:

First-class stamp: 95p Second-class stamp: 68p Large first-class letter: 1.45 Large second-class letter: 1.05

If you have bought stamps before the price increase, you can still use them. However, as the transition to barcoded stamps is ongoing, it's wise to visit the Post Office to ensure you have the correct stamps for your needs.

What to Do with Old Stamps?

Old stamps without QR codes may be returned to Royal Mail, and they will exchange them for the new barcoded versions. The website provides a form where you can request this exchange.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure your letters are correctly and efficiently mailed, whether through first-class or second-class service.
