Top Christmas Light Displays to Explore in the Southeast

Christmas season is all about bringing joy and warmth to everyone, and nowhere is this more evident than in the stunning Christmas light displays scattered across the southeastern United States. One such display that stands out is the one in James Island County Park in the greater Charleston, SC area. Every year, we make it a point to visit this magical place, and if you are in the region during the holiday season, you should consider a stop there as well.

James Island County Park: A Christmas Light Spectacle

James Island County Park offers an unforgettable experience, taking your breath away with its incredible light displays. Unlike other sites, such as Tanglewood in North Carolina, James Island does not charge an additional entrance fee for multiple runs through the park. A small side road leads back to the beginning, allowing visitors to relish the magical ride again and again. We have fond memories of my wife and me going through the park five times in a single evening, each time capturing the splendor of the displays on our cameras.

Cooper River Bridge and Creative Displays

One of the most impressive displays is near the park’s entrance, where the Cooper River Bridge is recreated in lights. The magic of this display comes alive at night, with one bridge gradually fading while another emerges, creating a mesmerizing transition. Additionally, the creativity of the displays is truly inspiring, with animations, unique features, and even Hanukkah displays.

Nearby Options: Tanglewood and Other Displays

While James Island offers a more extensive and visually stunning experience, Tanglewood in North Carolina is another noteworthy option. However, Tanglewood has its own set of challenges, including heavy traffic on I-40 that can make it difficult to capture the moment. Despite the waiting and limited access, the displays are impressive, albeit on a smaller scale compared to James Island. The entrance fee at Tanglewood is roughly half the cost of James Island, and it features a village of local artists showcasing their works.

Other Destinations: Enola Road Display and McAdenville Display

For those in the foothills, the Enola Road exit off I-40 in Morganton offers a special-needs school display at the J. Iverson Riddle complex. This is a heartwarming experience that is free of cost, with visitors encouraged to donate to support the school. In the Charlotte area, the Christmas drive-through display in McAdenville, Gaston County, is a popular choice. Additionally, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens near Belmont also offers a wonderful walking tour through Christmas lights. Despite the rain, the experience is still enjoyable, offering a peaceful winter hike amidst festive lights.

Christmas Light Displays in the Outer Banks

When the weather permits, you can also explore Christmas light displays in the Outer Banks. One recommended stop is the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, which offers a unique walking tour. However, one notable display in Southern Shores between Kitty Hawk and Currituck Beach was unfortunately missed by us. Currituck Beach itself also has a small light display conveniently located near the lighthouse, making it a charming addition to your holiday travels.

The key to enjoying these displays is to plan your visit early in the evening when it is not too crowded. Many parks have dedicated entrances, and staff will guide you accordingly.

These Christmas light displays are just a taste of the magic and joy that the holiday season brings. Whether you are planning a visit to these specific locations or simply seeking any of the numerous displays in the region, revel in the festive spirit and make cherished memories. Happy Holidays!
