Do Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Find it Objectionable When the Public Expresses a Belief That LDS Is False?
The question centers around how members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Church) react when the public expresses a belief that the LDS faith is false. While individual responses may vary, personal insights from active members can provide a more comprehensive answer.
Personal Perspective and Typicality Among Members
I can attest to the typical experience of most active members, and from that, I can share my perspective. For me, expressing doubts or disbelief in the LDS faith is not inherently objectionable but rather disappointing and even slightly sad. However, it is important to understand the context and the historical context of this perspective.
Disappointment and Sadness
Disappointment stems from the unrealized potential for individuals to learn, ponder, and pray about the truths of the gospel. In the early stages of one's journey in the LDS faith, such as before exposure to the Book of Mormon or gospel concepts, a lack of belief is not unusual. However, it is sad to think that such individuals might not have been fortunate to experience the blessings of seeking out these truths. This belief underscores the hope that if sincere, individuals will discover the truth as the Holy Ghost manifests it to them.
Historical Context and Prophetic Testimonies
The historical context of the LDS faith is instructive. Throughout history, including during the time of Jesus Christ, the number of believers has often been small. Jesus' own followers were a minority, facing opposition from the majority who demanded His punishment. This pattern has continued, with prophets throughout history facing similar challenges.
Historical figures such as Joseph Smith, the prophet of the restoration, have also faced trials and opposition. Prophets, as messengers of truth, have often been met with skepticism and even violence. In light of these challenges, the Lord has spoken: if someone does not believe the words of the prophets, they would not believe Jesus' own words either, as these are the same words that can be known to be true by the power of the Holy Ghost.
The Hope for All
While it is sad to see a lack of belief in the LDS faith, there is always hope. The Lord’s promise of the Holy Ghost’s guidance for those who seek truth provides a ray of hope for everyone. The story of Jesus receiving help from a father, seeking deliverance for his son, illustrates the love and compassion of God in this context.
As the father who sought Jesus' help cried out, expressing his sincere desire for a solution, the hope of divine intervention and the manifestation of truth through the Holy Ghost remains a beacon of light for all who seek it.
