Over 5 Years of Positive Lifestyle Changes: A Journey of Personal Transformation
My journey over the past five years has been one of self-discovery, resilience, and transformation. I've made several significant lifestyle changes that have positively impacted my life. From maintaining my education to overcoming past addictions, I've learned to appreciate what I have and focus on my growth.
Education and Personal Growth
One of the most important changes I've made is focusing on my education and personal growth. I never settle for less, knowing that constant learning is crucial. Unlike my father who struggled with job dissatisfaction over the years, I've vowed never to work for an employer I despise.
Health and Wellness
Another crucial aspect of my lifestyle changes has been improving my overall health and wellness. I've committed to exercising more, drinking less, and spending more time without clothes. These small steps have had a significant impact on my physical and mental well-being.
Stopping Unhealthy Behaviors
A few years ago, I made the decision to quit smoking, which I did successfully over 3.5 years ago. I also achieved sobriety 44 years ago, never to look back. Additionally, I stopped verbally abusing my partner 27 years ago, a 17-year transition period that tested my patience and resolve. These changes have not only improved my health but also my relationships.
Exercising and Drinking
Exercising more and drinking less has become a cornerstone of my healthy lifestyle. On occasions where I do indulge in parties, I now set a limit of six drinks to avoid blackouts. This decision not only benefits my mental health but also allows me to cherish the moments I spend without alcohol.
Resolving Personal Challenges
I've also made strides in resolving personal challenges. For example, I stopped presenting myself as smaller to appear taller, an outdated habit that I abandoned over 40 years ago. Now, I see myself as someone with a fixed height and view taller people as tall and shorter people as short.
Ending a Prevailing Lifestyle and Moving Forward
Letting go of a life of crime was another significant step. After a brief period as a driver/gopher/bodyguard for a professional sex worker, I realized that it wasn't a sustainable or safe path for me. Over 35 years ago, I decided to move forward and leave this life behind, focusing on more constructive endeavors.
Embracing Monogamy and Self-Acceptance
Making the transition to monogamy was not easy, but it was necessary. My journey with my wife was complex, but it ultimately led me to see the value in being committed to one person. My polyamorous inclinations diminished, leading me to appreciate the simplicity of being monogamous.
Handling Issues Related to Autism
Living with autism has its challenges, but over the past decade, I've learned to manage meltdowns and shutdowns better. I've stopped saying "man up" to myself and have developed strategies to walk away from situations that trigger these reactions. This has been a transformative experience, allowing me to lead a more peaceful life.
Professional Growth and Personal Resilience
Another ongoing challenge is adjusting to my professional life in the later years. At 60, I realize it's important to delegate tasks and work smarter, not harder. However, this change is still in progress. I'm working on allowing younger colleagues to assist me when needed, ensuring both safety and quality in our work.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the past five years have been a period of continuous growth and change. By maintaining my education, overcoming past addictions, and addressing personal and professional challenges, I've been able to lead a more fulfilling and positive life. This journey is far from over, and I will continue to seek new ways to improve and transform.
