Navigating the Sunday Night Blues: A Weekday Retiree's Perspective

Everyone has their own way of feeling on a Sunday night. For some, the feeling might differ, but for many, it aligns with a sense of dread and sadness as the weekend comes to an end. However, for those who have retired, the feeling can be subtly different. In this article, we explore how a weekday retiree might navigate these feelings on a Sunday night and the varieties of experiences one might encounter.

Common Feelings: Dread and Sadness

When you're working, you tend to rest on weekends because you are so burnt out during the week. However, for those who work standard Monday through Friday jobs, it's a feeling of dread and sadness upon realizing that the weekend is almost over. It is quite common.

Retirement and the Weekend

Now that you are retired, the feeling might be different. Instead of dread, you might start to pick and choose what you want to do. This is why I tend to stay busy most of the week. When I was working, rest on the weekends was necessary, but now, I have the flexibility to decide how I spend my time.

Languishing Sunday: Last Sunday and Next Sunday

The approach to Sunday can vary greatly. Last Sunday was a great day, but next Sunday, the prospect might be daunting. I don't know what the future holds, and no one does. Will I be able to enjoy the next Sunday, and if so, will it be a good day regardless of the circumstances? I hope that I can manage to navigate the unpredictability and still enjoy Sundays to come.

Weekend Rituals and Encouragement

For Sunday evenings, I am usually ready to go back to church for evening Bible study. After the session, I feel encouraged and refreshed. Looking forward to the next Sunday, this ritual provides me with continuity and hope.

End of the Workweek and Reflective Thoughts

Towards the evening, I am usually tired but pleased to have completed another day of worship leadership and community activities. I make it a point to walk the dogs and tidy up for the week of work. I go to bed early, giving thanks to God for a day spent with people of faith.

Pleasures and Challenges

Like everyone else, I do need some good sex with my wife, and this is a nightly desire. Our marriage has been strong for 47 years, and it's a joy to share these moments.

Additionally, the next day brings a new challenge, as the thought of school can be nerve-wracking. However, the support from my community and the sense of purpose from my daily activities help me face these challenges with grace.
