Navigating College Studies: My Journey and Strategies
Introduction
My path through college was not a straightforward one. It was a journey of discovery, experimentation, and adaptation. I started out in a multidisciplinary Business Information Technology program, ventured into marketing and international business, and finally settled in Art History, which I ultimately graduated with. Each subject I studied was a stepping stone, albeit a bumpy one, that helped shape my understanding of the world and my future career plans.
Exploring Subjects
Before deciding on a major, I took a diverse range of subjects that allowed me to explore different areas of interest. I began as a pre-med student but soon realized that was not the path for me. I then delved into fields such as Information Technology and then transitioned to marketing and international business. Eventually, I found my true passion in Art History, the major that would see me through graduation.
Study Methods and Techniques
The approach to studying varied greatly depending on the subject and the demands of my professors. For most classes, I would take notes in either a notebook or on my computer, depending on the instructor's allowance and the pace of lectures.
Note-Taking: During lectures, I either jotted down key points by hand or typed them up on my computer. Review and Reinforcement: After class, I would rewrite my notes to reinforce the material. This process was crucial in retaining information and ensuring thorough understanding. Comprehensive Learning: I would read my notes and re-read the content or look at slides to gain a deeper understanding of the material before moving on to the next class. When it came to writing papers, I often rushed through them. I would begin the process 2-3 days before the due date, read relevant materials, take down important parts, and create an outline. Finally, I would draft the paper.
Preparation for Presentations
For presentations, I followed a similar rigorous process. I would review the material, compile a list of key points, and jot down the main points. I would rehearse the presentation multiple times—usually two or three—and would be ready to go. Being a product of an Italian high school, where oral tests rather than presentations are common, I was always skilled at speaking confidently in front of an audience.
Managing Work and Study
A major challenge was juggling a full-time job with my studies. I managed this by enrolling in a limited number of classes each semester, rarely taking more than two classes at a time. This allowed me to attend only two to three classes per week, leaving me with precious days to complete assignments and prepare for exams.
Effective Time Management: Immediately after each class, I would spend at least one hour going over notes and reviewing materials. This was complemented by additional reading or assignment completion. Maximizing Free Time: On my days off from work, I would lock myself in a room with no distractions, focusing on one subject at a time. This intense focus helped me make efficient use of my free time. Early Preparation: Through strategic preparation, I minimized cramming, thereby ensuring a deeper understanding and better retention of information. For subjects I was unsure about, I relied on the textbook or reached out to my professors for clarification. This approach ensured that I was well-prepared for any exams or assignments.
Conclusion
My college journey was marked by a series of flexible study strategies and a commitment to self-discovery. Each subject I tackled taught me valuable lessons and helped shape my career path. While it was a challenging path, the diversity of subjects I explored enriched my learning experience and prepared me for the real-world challenges ahead.
