My Journey with BTS: From Casual Listener to ARMY
Introduction
My journey with BTS is one of those stories that you can hardly believe. A casual listener turned fanatical supporter within a few years. This article outlines my initial exposure to BTS, my transition from a neutral listener to a full-fledged ARMY, and reflects on the impact BTS has had on me.
The First Exposure: 2017
It all started in 2017 when my Korean friend introduced me to BTS's music video for Blood Sweat and Tears during our school days. The video hooked me in with its unique vibe and energy. Even though a few more years would pass before I openly admitted to being a fan, that was the moment I knew something special was there to be discovered.
2018: The Turning Point
While 2017 was the initial introduction, my interest in BTS genuinely emerged in 2018. That year, something changed as I started to watch K-pop shows and embrace the culture. I remember being aware of BTS in 2018 but officially stanned them after watching their New Year's show. To me, that performance signified the start of a new chapter in my life.
2019: My First Listen to BTS
In 2019, I heard 'Boy With Luv' for the first time. Despite only hearing it once, I couldn't forget the catchy line 'oh my my my'. This sparked a curiosity, and I began to delve deeper into BTS and K-pop. While I wasn't initially an 'ARMY', the positive and non-explicit nature of their music and message drew me in. The environment I found among ARMYs was welcoming, which further sealed the deal.
2020: The Realization and Exclusion
2020 marked a significant shift in my perception of BTS. I heard 'Dynamite' as it was trending, and it was a game-changer. It suddenly felt like I had to 'catch up' with the rest of the ARMYs. However, I also had an encounter with a member named V on a live stream platform, which didn't resonate well with me. This made me realize that my stance on BTS couldn't be as steadfast as some ARMYs' as my personal connection with them was more platonic. Feelings of awkwardness during Vlive sessions and their shows kept me at a neutral position up until now.
2021 and Beyond: Becoming a Super Fan
January 2021 was a turning point. Late February, I officially became an ARMY. I’ve been a baby ARMY for a while now, but I know my stuff. In just five years, I went from a neutral listener to an enthusiastic supporter, loving songs like 'Fake Love', 'Idol', and 'Dynamite'. The passion and dedication required to become an ARMY have been key during this journey.
My experience with BTS shapes my identity as a fan and a person. It's been a learning journey and a testament to my love for K-pop and the Korean culture in general.
From a casual listener in 2017 to an ARMY today, my experience with BTS remains a part of my ongoing narrative. The journey continues, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
