Can We Live a Good and Happy Life Without Believing in God?

Imagine a world in which 1.23 billion individuals, comprising 15% of the world's population, live peaceful, happy, and prosperous lives without subscribing to any belief in a higher power. These individuals, known as atheists, can provide valuable insights into this question.

Global Perspectives on Atheism

The Christian perspective often assumes a moral majority among its followers. However, it is important to remember that 72% of the world's population does not identify as Christian. Many Christians pontificate as if they represent a moral authority, but this is not universally true. The Christian movement is internally divided into at least 50 denominations and factions, each with differing interpretations of how the religion should operate. This division has a long history, dating back to the 5th century, with the Schism of 431 AD and continuing through to the 20th century when Pentecostalism split from the 'Holiness Movement'. Despite these divisions, Christians often claim that they live happy, peaceful, and prosperous lives. Yet, they frequently find themselves at odds and forming separate sects.

Reasons for Non-Belief in God

The reasons why one might not believe in God are varied and open to personal interpretation. Some individuals find the concept of a supreme being to be delusional or meaningless. Instead, they opt for a more pragmatic or rational approach to understanding the world.

Goodness and Severity of God

The concept of a benevolent God who willingly sacrificed His "Only Begotten Son" to save humanity from punishment is often cited. However, the idea of God’s severity and the understanding of sin and salvation are deeply ingrained in religious teachings. The Bible, specifically Corinthians 15.3–4, emphasizes the triumphant resurrection of Christ, which is crucial for belief in a benevolent deity.

Life without a belief in God does not automatically guarantee peace and happiness. However, it is possible to lead a fulfilling life without adhering to a particular religious doctrine. This can be explained by the sense of purpose and contentment that comes from living a life based on personal values and principles.

Living a Happy Life Without God

One does not always need to believe in a fictional sky-fairy to lead a peaceful and prosperous life. The idea that belief in a higher power is necessary for happiness is often illogical. Many individuals thrive without any religious affiliation, finding meaning and joy in their lives through non-religious means.

Examples of Happy Lives Without Belief

For example, my husband and I, who do not subscribe to any belief in gods, have been happily married for nearly 50 years. Our life is content and fulfilling. We have a loving family and valued friends. We enjoy our work and leisure time, making the most of our single life because it is all we have. Our happiness is not dependent on any religious beliefs.

It is clear that it is possible to have a wonderful life without believing in any of the many possible gods or any of the many possible ways to worship them. Life's purpose and happiness can be found through personal values and rational thinking, rather than reliance on religious doctrine.
