Can Dogs See Ghosts: A Personal Inquiry
As someone who has always believed that animals can see spirits, my belief was only reinforced with the arrival of my two dogs, Auggie and a Shitzu/Maltese mix. These pets have not only taught me about unconditional love but also about the intriguing possibility that they can sense things that are invisible to us. Their uncanny abilities have left me both fascinated and occasionally terrified, making me wonder about the realm of spirits and how animals perceive them.
The Characteristics of My Pets
My first dog, Auggie, a 75-pound white standard poodle, is a bit of a coward. While I adore him, his fearfulness can be quite amusing at times. On the contrary, my Shitzu/Maltese mix is virtually fearless, which is a rare trait among such small breeds. However, both of these dogs have shown behaviors that suggest they can perceive things I cannot.
Unexplained Behaviors: Staring and Shaking
One of the most striking behaviors I've observed is when Auggie stares at absolutely nothing, shaking like a leaf. This has happened almost from day one, often in situations that leave me puzzled. Virtually nothing scares this little Shitzu/Maltese mix, but he too has shown odd behaviors during late-night walks between midnight and 3 AM on weekends.
The Feeling of Being Stared At
Probably the most chilling experience for me is when I’m watching TV and feel like someone is staring at me, only to see Auggie suddenly do the same. He starts shaking and staring in the direction I have a feeling about, indicating that there might be something there even if I can't see it. This has happened more than once and always leaves me on edge.
Stopping and Looking Up
On my walks, both dogs have exhibited similar behaviors. When they stop dead in their tracks, look straight up, and then cower and walk off the sidewalk, it's clear they see something that I do not. The experience is frightening, as it feels like something is watching us and it's not always visible. Auggie’s sudden terror when staring at a tree in the fall is a perfect example of this. I’ve never seen a reason to pick up my pace in these situations, but his reactions force me to do so.
No Evidence but Trusting Their Warnings
While I have no proof or studies to suggest that my dogs can see ghosts, I am confident in their reactions. I know that my dogs have indeed reacted as if they've seen something that is not visible to me. In the end, since we can't ask them what they see, we must trust them when they warn us about something that is there but unseen. These experiences make me wonder about the nature of the spirits and how they interact with our world, if at all.
