A Unique Slice of Celebration: How My Birthday Falls on Independence Day
Every year, one of the most anticipated days for me comes upon the arrival of August 15th. This day holds more than just celebratory significance for me, as it also marks my birthday. Celebrating this triple crown day is a unique experience and one that comes with a mix of joy, memories, and even a bit of cynicism over time.
My Birthday on Independence Day: A Divided Heritage
My birthday falls on another day that my country holds dear: India's Independence Day. Starting from midnight of the 14th to late evening of the 15th, everyone wishes me Happy Independence Day. I naturally reciprocate with same to you and other heartfelt wishes, along with a flag emoji. People often write nice things, but a Happy Birthday along with the wishes would be amazing.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look
My parents are often the first to recognize the significance of the day. My father, for instance, remembers it because his secretary reminds him of it on August 14th. My mother tends to forget it, which is understandable given the myriad of other responsibilities she has. My brother, however, always does his best to include me in his celebrations, often bringing homemade gifts. My husband goes one step further and throws an Independence Day-themed party, which, while lovely, starts to feel repetitive after a few years.
It's worth noting that my mother-in-law is always ready with her blessings, while my father-in-law doesn't seem to understand the importance of birthdays much. The day is also a special time for my friends, who often remember me only when I change my WhatsApp profile picture. This day is even more poignant for my nephews, who eagerly await this to get their hands on their parents' phones and start calling me!
Intimacy Over Parties
After the last Independence Day-themed birthday bash I had in August 2019, I realized that parties were getting fewer, and eventually, my birthdays started feeling less about the actual celebration and more about the theme of the day. As the years went on, the public recognition of my birthday became overshadowed by the flag-waving and patriotism that Independence Day brings.
And then, last year... It became even more poignant. My father passed away on August 16, the day after Independence Day. Since then, I don't feel like celebrating any more. Not that it matters - only six people wished me on the day, and none of them were Kannan. The irony of starting life and ending it on such significant days is something I find both humorous and bittersweet.
A Personal Touch with My Little Brother’s Birth
My little brother's birthday is another interesting story. It happens to fall on Janmasthmi, a day with religious significance in the Hindu calendar. He was born on August 14th, which is also Pakistan's Independence Day. We celebrate his birthday on both days in a way that is both joyful and elevates a bit the spirit of patriotism. While we cut the cake and celebrate like any normal Indian kid, it's a unique blend of personal and national celebrations.
Adapting and Embracing Change
Changes in life often force us to adapt our traditions and rituals. While some might feel the need to keep the excitement and fervor of birthday celebrations, I have come to appreciate the quieter, more intimate moments. Friends and family wishes mean the world to me, and I cherish every message and call I receive on this day. Even though I am no longer throwing big parties, the act of interpreting Independence Day as a birthday celebration remains a significant part of my identity and a beautiful reminder of the changing times.
